Complimentary Training

The Club runs a number of complimentary training activities, including boxing-based training, strength and flexibility training and martial arts conditioning.

FlexiFit is a targeted set of routines that focus on improving strength and flexibility for the martial arts. It is based on the approach taken by Kit Lauchlin, and included "Contract-relax" (PNF) exercises and partner work.

Sessions primarily focus on core flexibility and strength, range of movement for limbs and integration of functional strength for the martial arts. It uses some of the familiar postures from yoga and provides a range of approaches to improve physical condition.

Gym and Swim is an integrated workout routine that provides supportive exercises for the martial arts. Gym sessions are primarily free weights based exercises that accentuate the development of core stability and joint stability. The swim sessions combine exercises seen in kobori (Japanese traditional swimming) and synchronised swimming.

The sessions are relatively informal and the exercises covered depend on who is able to attend a particular session and at what stage they are at in their training cycle.

PunchFit is based on development exercises for the sports of boxing and kickboxing, though it does not involve sparring or fighting an opponent.

It provides supplementary training for the Club’s members, and is great fitness work for those that are wanting to do a high energy, safe activity without training in a particular martial art.

Sessions involve warm up, shadow boxing, pad work and cool down activities over the course of an hour.

Safety and authenticity are the most important aspects of PunchFit training. Unlike some “boxercise” classes, PunchFit combinations are grounded in sound ring craft, and we do not engage in drills that increase the risk of injury to participants. We also use appropriate equipment, properly used to further reduce risk while maintaining intensity and functionality.

In addition, Dave Johnson, the Club's Karate instructor, is a qualified exercise physiologist, kettle bell instructor and fitness coach. He runs regular workshops for martial arts specific strength and flexibility acquisition, and these are also advertised through the Club.
