One of the things I am wanting to do over the next two months is to continue working to raise the profile of the Club through the wider community. Part of that will be revisiting how we put the Club "out there" and make it easier for people to know what we do and to find us.
The growth of any Club is partially driven by word of mouth and the recommendations of people within it. With that said, I'd like to ask that you think about who in your circle of friends and acquaintances might be interested in receiving regular information about the Club
For those of you on Facebook, think about people who you can invite to "like" the Club's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/BBRDMartialArts (and make sure you like it yourself if you haven't yet). For others, invite them to subscribe to the Budo Bulletin so they get the posts in the mail!
Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who participated on Sunday for the NCAS practical evaluation sessions. The sessions were in effect a mini-seminar and as always it was marvellous to see and experience the way other instructors approach their art.
I wanted to thank Peter Hills who provided us with the space at his home dojo and his hospitality afterwards, and to Lauren, Maaike, Tracey and Jess who came down with me for the day and threw themselves into each of the sessions (as they do each week in class). And of course thanks to Michael Nash, Josh Maygar, and Danial Smith for their sessions!
I'm sure that we can look forward to more opportunities to share and train with each other.
Announcing...the second round of the sword raffle.
As it turns out, the winner of the first round, from Atherton, chose to claim the silver blade...therefore leaving the colour-treated blade, or "DARKBLADE"
up for grabs.
If you are interested, please get in touch with Adam Brannigan.
Soke demonstrating his naginata technique
Hello All,
Greg, Sian and I have just finished our second day of training with Sekiguchi Soke. This is the third seminar that Greg and I have attended.
This seminar has differed in many respects to the ones we have attended in recent years. We have the honour of also training with Sonoko Sensei, who has been translating for Soke, and so we have had a greater insight into the philosophical and martial basis of his budo. So far we have explored sword and naginata techniques; repeatedly, in seiza, on a hard concrete floor, while smiling. The seminars with Soke are always hard work, but to train under the 21st headmaster of our style is a wonderful experience and connects us firmly to the koryu tradition.
Who will join us next time, in seiza, on a hard concrete floor, while smiling?
A quick request for anyone who has not provided an expression of interest to go down on Sunday: Michael needs to confirm numbers ASAP.
Right now (including Michael) there is a full carload of 5 who have said they are definitely going. If you are intending to come, please let Michael know no later that Tuesday training so that we can arrange to get a minivan to fit everyone in.
In addition Peter Hills, sensei who is hosting the day at his home dojo, will be putting a BBQ on for lunch and has asked that we bring some salads etc. to share. Michael will coordinate things closer to the weekend in that regard ...
Just to let everyone know that the BBRD executive will be meeting this Tuesday afternoon, and there will be a number of items on the agenda to help frame the Club's efforts for the rest of this year.
If there is anything that you wish brought in front of the Executive to consider, please let either Sian know (Sian.Carlyon@usq.edu.au) or send a message through your respective instructor(s).
For those interested and available I am wanting to service a bunch of the Club's shinai Wednesday lunch time (12.30 pm) and was thinking of making it a maintenance workshop for kendo and other martial arts equipment.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Michael on 04 1144 2081 and let him know. We will most likely do it either at the MEAC or at Michael's house, depending on weather and numbers.
Shoulder to shoulder ...
Stage 1 of the dojo/MEAC clean up was successfully completed on Saturday. I'd like to make special mention of everyone who turned up to help sort, stack and scrub in aid of getting a little more control over our space and equipment. (Thanks Adam, Andrew, Brady, Jen, Jess, Maaike, Tracey, Sian, and Stuart)
The floor of the MEAC should be attended to by the School's contract cleaners today, so we will be able to clear out the now (very) packed store room this week and lay the mats for the remainder of the school holidays.
Just a few housekeeping matters that arise from the clean up:

Just another quick call for expressions of interest ...
Over the coming weeks I am wanting to get under way with the long talked about series of short documentaries, promotions videos and technique videos.
I know that we have significant talent in the Club, including those with experience behind the camera. So if you have an interest in helping to develop storyboards, camera/lighting operation, conducting some video interviews, or any of the other aspects of getting this project off the ground, Contact Michael ASAP!
