YAMATO: THE DRUMMERS OF JAPAN
VENUE: Empire Theatre
WHEN: Tuesday 12 September, 8pm
TICKETS: $45 - $55
Heart-thumping rhythm, thunderous sounds and explosive beats, the Yamato drummers of Japan push their limits in this staggering display of physical strength and ferocious skill.
In this high-energy performance, the unmistakable sound of the traditional Taiko drum, used in Shinto rituals, is challenged by Yamato as they use their entire bodies to produce their breathtaking beats.
Yamato was founded in Japan's Nara Prefecture in 1993. Every year, Yamato tours the world for 6 to 10 months, creating and presenting original Yamato compositions and stages. The troupe will continue to cherish and uphold Yamato, the spirit of Japan.
With drums that weigh up to half a tonne, the Yamato drummers' remarkable physical strength and trademark infectious energy leaves you feeling totally exhilarated!

This week marks the start of what has traditionally been an overpacked month of activity for the Club. And for those of us studying, it is also accompanied by the avalanche of deadlines for first assignments. This year is no different, with Club based activities and commitments scheduled for every weekend.
As noted last week, this Sunday morning, we will be off to the knife defense seminar being taught by Jason Griffiths, sensei and Don Ouellette, sensei just outside of Marburg. Details can be found on the Club's "What's On" calendar on the web site. Currently, we have five of us heading down, and if you wish to add to this number, you must let me know today, as the organisers need to confirm how many to cater for. We will finalise transport arrangements on Thursday evening in between Arnis and Jujutsu. There will be no Kendo or Arnis training this Sunday as a consequence.
We will confirm later this week, but we may still get a quick Kendo session in this Saturday to make up for the absence of Sunday training. I'm considering a quick session from 2.00–3.20 pm, which then still allows for us to help with the regular dojo clean before Jujutsu. While reminded of that, I'll talk about cleaning in next weeks's bulletin.
From there, the month only becomes more busy. Next week we are planning a trip down to Brisbane to train with the Kenshinkai in Kendo, the following week is both the opportunity to do your First Aid/CPR refresher with Chris Clayton, the Queensland Kyudo Association's Annual General Meeting (using Zoom as a way of remote conferencing this in), and the Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival. The week after is another Brisbane trip to participate in the IBF Training Day. So yes, something extra curricular each weekend. I will let everyone know about what impact his might have on regular training schedules as each week starts.
I just wanted to note that the Systema study group has been a little quiet of late, and that we have been thinking of ways to get things moving on this front. Unfortunately, both Sean and Ray have had to make the decision to pull away from the group for a while. However, Dylan has stepped into the breach to take on the responsibilities of coordinating activities for the immediate future. I will still be providing input and training when I can, but Dylan will be the first point of contact for all matters Systema.
So I'd like to therefore welcome Dylan to the formal part of the Club's Executive committee, and will look forward to his contributions in the coming months!
I wanted to officially confirm the changes to the arrangements for Go. I will be taking back coordination of Go, and we will be again convening on a Tuesday lunch time at 1 pm for anyone who would like a game. So if you are free pop past and look for the big banner. I will try to post a few teaser puzzles over the coming weeks to get you thinking about your strategy!
It is that time of year that we start to think seriously about Uni Games preparation. Competitions for Kendo, Judo and Taekwondo are on 23 and 24 September.
The USQ is now recruiting judo, kendo and taekwondo athletes and BBRD will be helping to coordinate matters. If you are currently studying with USQ and interested in competing, please contact PhoenixCentral.Toowoomba@usq.edu.au for more information or to register for the team ASAP!
In addition, QKR has made a call out for volunteers and shimpan for the kendo side of thing. We would be heading down on the Friday to help set things up in the afternoon, then be staying through till competition close on Sunday. To shinpan, you need to be 3DAN or higher, though we also require a slew of volunteers to do everything from time keeping through to scoreboard duties and ribbon tying. Volunteers will have access to heavily discounted accomodation and lunches will be provided. Dave Fitzgibbon has asked for each dojo to provide a list of volunteers, so if you are interested, please let me know this week.
For those of you who have wanted to practice Arnis but have found the 5 pm Thursday time a challenge to get to, we will now be running a second session on a Sunday from 10 – 11.30 am at the MEAC, running parallel with the regular Kendo session.
Dylan Green will be ably directing traffic on the Sundays while I am otherwise occupied with Kendo. We had our first session this weekend past, and we will look forward to building numbers over the coming weeks!
Just a quick reminder that Saturday fortnight we will be heading down to Marburg to attend the knife defence seminar run by Don Ouellette, sensei and Jason Griffiths sensei. I would strongly encourage all jujutsu-ka and arnisidores to take the time and attend. Cost will be $20, which will include lunch, and we shall be car pooling to get to the venue.
Please let me know no later than the end of this week so that we can provide numbers to the organisers.
Chris Clayton from Resolute Fitness will be running CPR and First Aid courses on Saturday 19 August.
CPR only will run from 9 – 11 am and cost $70, and if you need your three yearly update for First Aid, it will run from 9 am – 2 pm and cost $140.
Chris brings a wealth of experience to the presentation, which usually goes beyond the "bare bones" versions I've seen on some courses. There is an online component, which means that the time is spent productively rather than the typical "talk and chalk" mode.
I strongly recommend that everyone think seriously about doing this, as it is an important skill to have and a great opportunity to do so with an excellent presenter. For booking, contact:
