Club muster report

It was great to see familiar faces and meet new folk at the Club muster on Wednesday. As always, we look forward to folk making the trip up the other end of West Street to participate in classes and seminars!

Many thanks to Kateena, Sean and Tracy for coming along and encouraging people to sign up.

Tozando order update

Hi all,

By the time your reading this the equipment order should be in by now. I will keep everyone updated, and will deliver as soon as it arrives. The order shouldn’t take more than a few weeks.

See you all in the Dojo.

Reminder: Club Muster this Wednesday 26 February

Just a quick reminder that we shall be waiving the Club’s colours this Wednesday to see if we can sign up a few more members.

We will be “open for business” from 12-2 pm in the stadium of the Clive Berghoffer Recreation Centre (CBRC), Baker Street.

We do not have formal space to run demonstrations this year, but we shall set up some Go boards and have our main training equipment to have a chat about what we do!

Come down and see us and say Hi! and we shall look forward to doing what we can to grow numbers.

Tozando order

Hello all!

With some big National level events coming up on the Club calendar, I’m organising a club order to be placed on the 1st of March. I would like to include Grapplingstore and Kendo Star in this order. I don’t think we will get a discount but the equipment on offer is worth the money, and I can personally vouch for the shinai that are sold. Grappling store is our clubs provider of MMA gloves and shin pads. Links to the websites are provided below. Look it over, have your order ready, and pass it on to your sensei or discipline coordinator.

Thanks

Sean T

Kendo Coordinator

Updating member details

In preparation for the start of the new academic year, we will be updating the records of Club members.

This will include ensuring that everyone has a “vanity” shot included in our Martialytics database, and, more importantly, that your current details are all up to date. It is especially important that any relevant medical conditions and emergency contact details are correctly noted, so that in the rare event that we should need to activate them, instructors have your details easily to hand.

Details required include:

  • Legal name

  • Postal address

  • Email address that you check most regularly

  • Phone number (mobile preferred)

  • Date of birth

  • Emergency contact name and details

  • Relevant injuries or medical conditions that may impact on your (and other’s) participation or safety

  • Current disciplines/activities you are training in

  • Whether you consent to having pictures or video of yourself used publicly in Club promotional material

  • Current USQ student number, or note if you are a current staff member or alumnus

All of your details are subject to applicable legislative and USQ policy requirements for privacy.

We will be using these details to meet our requirements for re-affiliation with USQ Student Life, and to ensure that you are fully covered for insurance for the coming year.

If possible, could you please come to the dojo a little earlier that usual to your training sessions so that we can check to see that all details for you are correct.

Club equipment audit

Over the next two weeks, we shall be conducting a Club equipment audit so that we can properly check all of our assets, and see what needs repair or replacement. Over the years there have been a number of items that have gone out and not been returned, which impacts on our ability to cater for new students. For instance, there are many more keikogi than pants in the store, even though all of the donated uniforms started as complete sets. Likewise with obi, where there are far fewer in the tub than this time last year.

One of the things we will be doing is putting an identifying number on all Club items, and signing that item out to you against the register, so that we have a formal record of all equipment that you are borrowing.

If you have any equipment or uniforms at home, could you please bring it along to training so that it can be checked off.

Likewise, if you have any old equipment or uniforms that are in generally good repair and are not using any more, please consider donating them to the Club. This is especially the case for adult-sized bogu, as we are starting to grow numbers both in Toowoomba and in Gin Gin.

Tom Johnson sensei visiting tomorrow night (11 February)

Just confirmed that Tom sensei will be visiting Toowoomba tomorrow night for Iaido training.

Can those who are intending to be there please be a little earlier in arriving (around 7 pm) so that he is able to get away promptly at the end of the evening to head back to Brisbane.

BBRD Executive meeting this Saturday 12 pm

The first executive meeting for the year will be held 12 noon this Saturday, where we will be plotting out the strategic direction for the Club this year in the lead up to the AGM in April, and getting administrative things squared away for our promotional activities at the Student Life Expo on Wednesday 26 February.

One of the things we are going to be looking at is the fee structure for the Club, which has remained largely unchanged over the years despite the Club’s costs for insurance and space rental significantly increasing. We will, of course, be trying to ensure that costs are fairly distributed for activities.

In the lead up, we would also like the membership to give us feedback about our marketing channels. If you could make comment either on the Blog or Facebook regarding your thoughts. How did you find the Club? What do you think of the advertising material (flyers, posters etc.) we have currently — is there need for change in their content or new media entirely? What can we do to increase the number of folk training with us across all the various disciplines and activities we support?

I’ll look forward to reading your thoughts!
